The City of Monroe Commission on the Environment and Water Quality MINUTES August 14, 2014 7:00 pm

CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson Pfund called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm

MEMBERS PRESENT:  A roll call of members was taken and a quorum was present.

Motion to accept the meeting minutes from July 10, 20014by Barry LaRoy; second by Issac Owens. Motion passed.


Update on Projects:

Fish Passage – COMPLETED!!!!

Veterans – Fish Passage

Grape Dam – Mill Race

Dam 5 – around IHM

Dam 4 – Post Office

Eco study to be completed week of August 18, 2014; report due in September 2014.

S-PAC – Richard Mick report – MDOT corridor Study – gave tours to MDOT representatives – Barb Barton will seed for Wild

Melanie Foose MDEQ – DNAPL issue,1) MDEQ, FORD, EPA are in negotiations.

2) Sand temporary cover is still fine, restrictions on dredging continues per Mr. Micka  3) Meeting will be set up once a plan is in place.

2014 GLC PAC Support Grant

Media outreach –1) River Raisin Clean up Advertisement – August 23, 2014

2) Interpretive Signs have been installed: Hellenberg. Veterans and St. Mary’s Park

3) River Raisin Heritage Plan is being developed.

4) Educational Outreach Material: Fact Sheets, Fishing Guide, Posters ( Funding is available for Facts Sheets)

5) Need to update PAC representative: Motion by Barry LaRoy to have Mr. Micka serve a representative to PAC on behalf of COTE/City of Monroe, Second by Bonnie Finzel-Doster, Motion carries.


Items form Members:

Mr. Micka – 1) Outreach Article in Monroe Parks and Recreation Publication “ Restoring the River Raisin”.2) Sea Grant Case Study on Monroe. 3) National Geographic Highlighted the River Raisin. 4) Water Trail plan 5) Tour of Put in Bay 6) August 21 in the Port of Monroe will be the Tall Ship “ BRIG NIAGARA”

Issac Owens – would like to know when fish will be stocked in the River Raisin.
